Yearbook Photo Collection

Yearbook Photos

Happy 2023 everyone.  I thought it would be fun to gather yearbook photographs into a collection here on the blog. What follows is incomplete and I need your help to fill in the gaps. Please send me your yearbook photos, year, and school name and I will add them to this collection. You probably have the yearbook on a bookshelf in your home; simply take a photo of the page with your phone or digital camera and email it to me.  I will take care of the rest (cropping it, etc.). In particular it would be great to have more Le Moyne photographs. I have not yet included yearbook photos from my generation or younger, but am glad to add them. Blog posts are fluid, so the version posted this month should grow with your help.

There are many possible ways to organize this collection. I have chosen to group them primarily by the school and secondly chronologically.

Marcellus High School

The birth order of the Fenlon children was Edward and Emmett (12 Nov 1909), Clara (5 Feb 1911), Mary and Marcella (29 Dec 2013), but their high school graduation order was quite different!

1930 Clara E. Fenlon

My great aunt Clara graduated from MHS in 1930. The yearbook had this to say about her:
"Clara Fenlon, our very industrious student, comes from the vicinity of Marcellus Falls. Clara has devoted her time to language and history, and is thus up on all the dallant wars and heroic dates. She has even tried the eighteen-day diet, but it proved unsatisfactory, according to her estimation. Clara proved her ability to act in the Senior play by playing the part of cook and housekeeper."

Father Driscoll and all the St. Francis Xavier Catholic boys and girls in the MHS class of 1930.

1932 Emmett Fenlon

Two Emmetts in the 1932 graduating class of 18 students! Our Emmett chose a line from the William Blake poem The Schoolboy.

1933 Edward & Mary Fenlon

1934 Marcella Fenlon

Syracuse University

1926 & 1927 Mary G. Treacy

Mary Treacy attended SU in the mid-1920s. The entry for 1926 (top) has her with the Juniors and she appears in the 1927 yearbook (bottom).

I have a theory that Mary might have graduated in December 1926 as her class ring has '26 on it as Aunt Janet explains (the video might take a moment to load):

1929 & 1930 Anne L. Treacy

My grandmother Anne L. Treacy attended Syracuse University from 1927-1930. Her entry in the 1929 Onondagan yearbook was for her work as one of the women's assistant associate editors on "The Orange Peel", a literary and humor magazine, and she was also involved in the St. Thomas Moore Foundation during her time there. She received a Bachelor of Arts in 1930. I think the photograph below is her senior portrait from the 1930 yearbook.

This is probably the 1930 SU Yearbook photograph of Anne L. Treacy.

1931 & 1932 Kay V. Treacy

Kay Treacy followed in the footsteps of her two older sisters and also attended SU.  1931 (top) was her junior year and 1932 (bottom) she appeared on the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority page.

It was not only the Treacys who attended SU, so did the Marcella and Mary Fenlon just a few years later.

1937 & 1938 Mary and Marcella Fenlon

1937Onondagan yearbook entry for Mary Fenlon, her junior year.

1938 Onondagan yearbook entry for Marcella A. Fenlon, her senior year.

1938 Yearbook entry for the Phi Mu sorority with both Marcella (left) and Mary (right).

Potsdam Normal School (now SUNY Potsdam)

Emmett and his younger sister Clara both attended Potsdam to train to be teachers.  I believe they attended from 1931 to 1935.

1935 Emmett and Clara Fenlon

1935 Senior yearbook entry for Clara and Emmett. The Rural Life Club, Country Life Club, and Hiking Club are appropriate for the North Country of St. Lawrence County.

Clara was a member of the hikers club.

Emmett was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma fraternity.

Both Clara and Emmett were in the IRC.

Clarkson University

1934 Edward J. Fenlon
I found that Edward J. Fenlon, Jr. attended Clarkson during the 1933-1934 academic year.

Lowville Academy

1936 & 1937 Anne Treacy

1936 from The Lowacadian yearbook.

1937

Copenhagen

1953 Emmett, Janet, Mark, & Tim Fenlon

Emmett was one of the primary advisors for the class of 1953 and the yearbook is dedicated to him. Also acknowledged on this page of the yearbook are two other advisors, Miss Laura Varga and Mr. George Fullerton.

1971 Emmett & Anne Fenlon

Emmett and Anne listed with their subjects and alma maters.

Emmett in the classroom. I love the pocket protector.

Anne at her desk.  I love her glasses.

Anne was the French Club advisor. The headphones are for listening to tape recordings of French being spoken.

1973 Emmett & Anne Fenlon

Emmett teaching astronomy (corona, solar flares, etc.)

Anne teaching French I. This photo appeared in the 1973 yearbook, but I suspect it is an older photo.

Emmett in the classroom. I love the craftsman pocket protector, stack of graded papers, and the ubiquitous watch on a gold flexible bracelet.

Anne was the advisor for the Student Council.

1973 was the year that Emmett and Anne retired and throughout their personal copy of the yearbook several of their students wished them well in retirement. Three examples of these comments are shown below.

The final comment from Carl Woodward is the funniest.  It appears Emmett used to call him Ed by mistake.  Does anyone know if Carl had a brother named Ed?  Of course, Emmett had a twin brother named Ed, perhaps Carl reminded him of his brother?

Camillus Elementary School

1954 & 1955 Clara E. Fenlon

Clara Fenlon was a teacher for 44 years.  The last 31 of these years she taught in Camillus Elementary School which is part of the West Genesee school district. Below are photos of her and her second grade students from 1954 & 1955.  I will have a future blog post dedicated to Clara, so please send me your stories about her.

Baldwinsville Adademy & Baker High School

Mary Fenlon's husband Kermit P. Smith graduated from Baldwinsville Academy.  Their children also lived in Baldwinsville and graduated from Baker High School, the new name for the Academy.

1933 Kermit Paddock Smith

1962 Edwin Gerard Smith

1965 Barbara Elizabeth Smith

1971 Kathryn Margaret Smith

Closing Thoughts...

I hope you enjoyed this collection.

I'd like to thank Brian and Kate for sending me the 1953 and 1973 Copenhagen yearbooks. They greatly added to this post. The rest of the collection I found on various websites, but it difficult tracking these down and the coverage is incomplete.

I also want to thank Doug Nightingale from the Marcellus Historical Society for providing information on the MHS classes of 1930 and 1933.

So, with your help I'd love to add more. Please dig out your old high school, college, or graduate school yearbooks, take a photo of the pages you are on, and email them to me.  Any and all yearbook photos are welcome.
